Some Galesburg Residents Want Better Street Lighting
Residents living on Pine Tree Lane in Galesburg attended Monday night's city council meeting.

The group brought 21 signed petitions out of 24 homes on the street requesting street light on exiting utility poles.

Judy Radakovich spoke to council members and said it was a matter of safety.

"We are requesting the city to provide street lighting on our existing utility poles due to the crimes committed at our neighboring mall, we feel street lights will enhance our safety."

Pine Tree Lane is a private street in Galesburg, and it is the city's policy not to provide lights.

The street sits in seventh ward Alderman Mike Lummis's district and he had done a little research on the issues. He estimates the cost to install the the lights, he proposes three, would be about 90 dollars a piece and cost around nine dollars a month to power.

Some alderman seemed in favor of providing the lights for the street while Alderman Wayne Dennis and Russell Fleming felt city code should be followed.

City administration was given the task to research the matter and bring it back to council as soon as possible.
