Cuts Force Closures for Some Human Services Already
(IRN)-Human service providers across Illinois are already shutting down following the announcement of major cuts to the Department of Human Services.

Governor Pat Quinn late last week announced roughly $208 million in cuts to DHS, which provides drug rehabilitation, mental health care and child care, among other services.

Bruce Carter, CEO of The Wells Center in Jacksonville, says his center and many other largely state-funded agencies are the first stop for those seeking drug and alcohol rehabilitation; private sector alternatives don’t provide the same services.

"Very few people seek that first these days," says Carter. "Most people in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are there because they were referred there by a treatment center."

State Representatives Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) and Jim Watson (R-Jacksonville) are co-sponsoring a resolution asking the governor to immediately halt cuts to DHS.

The $208 million represents DHS cuts for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2011, which means budgets for some services have already gone past their allocation levels and will be stopped immediately.
