Liquor Rules in Effect for Unofficial St. Pat's
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- As usual, many University of Illinois students at the Champaign-Urbana campus plan to celebrate "Unofficial St. Patrick's Day" next week. And, also as usual, Champaign Mayor Jerry Schweighart has issued his annual emergency orders to regulate the flow of liquor at the event.

As liquor commissioner, Schweighart has executive powers relating to liquor sales in city stores and bars. He tells the (Champaign) News-Gazette that bars and liquor stores in the campus area may not serve or sell alcohol before 11 a.m. on March 4. Bars also may not serve pitchers of alcohol or shots of undiluted alcohol, and all drinks must be served in paper or plastic cubs that day.

The event, which traditionally involves heavy drinking, was created because students are usually on spring break on March 17.
