Illinois Becomes Haven for Democrats on the Run
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois seems to have become the Switzerland on the Prairie as lawmakers fleeing votes in Wisconsin and Indiana take refuge in its borders.

Illinois is known for its wayward politicians and back-door political dealings. And some residents tired of the state's own political problems are wondering why the Wisconsin and Indiana Democrats had to come to Illinois.

Others say it might to Illinois' political image a rare bit of good.
University of Illinois-Springfield political science professor Chris Mooney says that for once Illinois' politicians look a little less crazy than those in neighboring states.

The state Republican Party, for its part, is urging donors to send money, lest Illinois become a "Safe Haven for Tax & Spend Democrats." Democrats control the governor's office and both legislative houses in Illinois.
