Not Just Sidewalks and Driveways Should be Cleared of Snow
With frigid temperatures outdoors, cranking up the heat might seem like a good idea, but there are a few safety tips to remember.

Dave Rupert, a service manager with MSI heating and cooling, tells WGIL, first vent pipes need to properly cleared.

"There's two pipes that can come out of your house, one is an intake, the other is an exhaust for a high efficiency furnace. That's probably one of the main culprits in this type of weather that would cause a furnace to have problems. You want to keep those free from snow and sometimes they get icicles on them as well so keep those clear and that will alleviate a majority of the problem."

If a clog or blockage forms, Rupert says a furnace could shut down completely.

He also reminds people to keep up with regular furnace maintenance, such as changing the filter once a month.
