Normal Mitsubishi Plant to Produce Outlander
(IRN)-The new Outland Sport Utility Vehicle will be produced at the Mitsubishi Plant in Normal. The Outlander will replace the four other models now made at the plant. Production will start in mid- 2012.

Jerry Berwanger, the chief operating officer of the plant, says the plant will produce two different versions of the model at once. When asked if the new model means more jobs for the plant, Berwanger says that depends on how well the vehicle sells all over the world.

Mitsubishi is getting a $45 million state tax break for 10 years.

Workers at the plant, represented by UAW Local 2488, took a pay cut to ensure the new model. Union President Ralph Timan says workers were close to losing the plant, until the concessions were made.

Mitsubishi has said the new model is part of its worldwide efforts to rejuvenate sales. The total anticipated production in 2012 will be 15,000 vehicles. Current production level in Normal is 34,000 vehicles.
