IL Officials Helped 4,000 Motorists in Storm
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials say state authorities and the Illinois National Guard assisted more than 4,000 stranded motorists during this week's blizzard.

Snowplows cleared 16,500 miles of highway with help from 2,800 Illinois Department of Transportation drivers.

More than 500 Illinois National Guard servicemen helped the Illinois State Police with stranded motorists and 270 vehicle accidents.

Even conservation police from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources used all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles to make welfare checks and assist 550 stranded motorists. They rescued several dozen people, including a stroke victim.

The Illinois Tollway had all 183 of its snow plows on the road and handled 1,549 incident calls. Among other things, Tollway officials helped with 33 requests for tire changes or fuel and towed 133 vehicles.
