American Red Cross in Need of Donations
The effects of last week's blizzard are stilling being dealt with.

The two day storm that paralyzed much of Illinois left the American Red Cross short on blood supplies.

Theresa Kuhlmann with the American Red Cross tells WGIL, donations began to drop even before the storm.

"When we had our national appeal and we were asking people to make appointments, people really did step up to help and made appointments, towards Monday as we heard the storm was approaching, a lot of people starting thinking about hunkering down and about things you have to do and getting home. So Monday before the storm really came full force, there we a lot of blood drives that closed early, some that were canceled on the books already, Tuesday we the day that we really didn't have much of anything going on."

Kuhlmann adds that no one was open Wednesday for donations and last week alone more than 1,000 appointments for blood donation were cancelled.

She encourages anyone able to to call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment and give blood.
