U. of Ill. plans to open DC Lobbying Office
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois plans to open an office for its lobbyists in Washington, D.C. this spring to try to improve its ability to attract federal research money and increase its influence.
Kathy Laing is the university's executive director of governmental relations. She said the university has long lobbied in Washington but it has never had an office there. Six other Big Ten schools do. They include Michigan and Wisconsin.

Laing says that when she was hired last summer, university president Michael Hogan made it clear that the university needs to do a better job of lobbying in Washington.

Hogan says the university now draws about $800 million a year in federal research money.

The university also plans to hire a new director of federal relations to lead the office.
