Mayor Proposes Extended Budget
Galesburg's top elected official wants to do something he claims other cities already do -- craft a multi-year budget.

Mayor Sal Garza made the announcement this week. The budget for the current fiscal year was approved in December, but talks continue about how to cut or add to it, as evidenced by another city work session scheduled for Monday night.

Garza says he simply wants to make the best use of everyone's time and ideas by going this route.

"The efforts going to be to capitalize on the equity in order to enable, not only the council, but the city administration, to pursue additional value-added initiatives and activities that drive greater efficiences and benefits to the community," Garza said.

Garza says he's looking at, at least, a two-year type of budget. However, he says in order to dispel some misinformation already out there about his idea, the city council would still have to vote on a budget annually, and regardless would still have to take up an annual property tax levy.

The mayor says his research into the idea isn't yet done, however.
