Area High School Students Building Towards Robotics Competition
The University of Illinois Extension 4-H and Carl Sandburg College are sponsoring a high school robotics team gearing up for an upcoming regional competition.

16 area high school and home school students have been building a robot for more than four weeks. 11 mentors have been there to assist them with a kit of parts delivered by officials of the First Robotics Competition.

Project Advisor Amy Bruckner tells the WGIL Morning News this package includes what she calls, "cutting edge technology."

"For example, this year they've incorporated a component in the kit of parts that's a Kinnect that X-Box is promoting right now," she said. "Can you imagine if a student would move their arm up, the robot's arm would then move up?"

"That's a really exciting thing for the kids to take cool technology and really apply it to something that could essentially be a real world application."

The robot is being rendered through computer software, also designed by the students. The final day of constructing the robot is February 21st.

The F-R-C competition is March 24th in Chicago. The 4-H team will form an alliance with two other robots and compete in a three-on-three robotic basketball game.

C-S-C's Center for Manufacturing Excellence hosted an open house Friday night to show off the team's work thus far.
