Controversial Parcel Bids Withdrawn by St. Mary's Square Living Center
Looks like the property owners who were denied bids to two adjacent tracts of land on Monday night will get a shot at claiming the parcels after all.

The city of Galesburg issued a new release Friday indicating that the parent company of St. Mary's Square Living Center is withdrawing their bids for the city-owned properties on West First Street.

At Monday's City Council meeting, a controversial 4 to 3 vote was tallied, awarding the bids to the parent company. The parcels were among almost a dozen others awarded to them Monday, intended for use in developing 25 group-homes for the developmentally disabled in Knox County.

Neighbors though had been taking care of the land for years, and claimed they deserved the same opportunity to acquire the properties. Now, they will have their chance.

Mayor Sal Garza says the decision to withdraw the bids will lead to an outcome that brings a greater level of satisfaction to all parties involved.

The land will be reconsidered before alderman at a future city council meeting.
