Knoxville Vehicle Stickers May Change in Price
Something every Knoxville resident must purchase each year for their vehicles is sparking some debate among the city council.

The wheel tax has been priced at $8-dollars since 1996. The council Monday night will vote on pushing the vehicle sticker to $10-dollars for the average vehicle.

Alderman Jim McGovern says he's not opposed to it, but he'd like to know that it's being properly used on sidewalk repair.

"It is only a $2-dollar raise, and it's right in line with all the other communities in the surrounding area," McGovern said. "But I just want to make sure that if we get the money, that it gets used in the proper places."

"And when we have sidewalks and so forth that need to be repaired, we don't simply play a political game and vote down the idea of repairing that sidewalk so we can use the money elsewhere."

Lack of sidewalks have been an issue near Knoxville schools, and McGovern says if the wheel tax is raised then there should be more progress is fixing that problem.

Council Member Tom Worden recently commended Galesburg for earning the Safe Routes to School Grant for more sidewalks. He says there's no reason why Knoxville can't apply for the award also.
