Mother Nature Plays Nice with Overpass Construction
Work on the West Main Street overpass was going to take most of the winter off, but then again, we haven't really had much of a winter.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says work has begun again on the overpass, several weeks ahead of schedule, due to the relatively mild temperatures for this time of year.

Carl tells the WGIL Morning News a lot of metal work has been done in recent weeks.

"The contractor there, the last week or two, he's been splicing the middle, or the steel piling that goes up that'll be the support for the bridge," Carl said.

"He's been able to splice those, and will be able to finish those today (Monday.)"

Carl says that will allow the contractor to move on to some other work, thanks to the weather.

"Since the frost has gone out of the ground, now he'll be able to start bringing in embankment material to resume building the retaining wall."

Carl says getting the embankment placed is the next key point in the schedule, and he hopes to be able to do that soon. The overpass construction remains on time and on budget.
