Local Hog Farmer Appreciates Pork Expo
A local farmer says he's changed the way he farms, but otherwise has had a good time doing it.

Steve Main of Altona was one of the local residents in attendance at Wednesday's Illinois Pork Expo in Peoria.

Main says he had a lot of good crops this year, but otherwise, he's changed the way he's a hog farmer.

Main tells WGIL the changes ended up being the right thing to do.

"We've changed our operation quite a bit, we've got a sow business," he said. "So we are no longer doing as much in our farm, and that' really freed up a lot our time."

"But we've invested our money into a sow co-op and we're getting fixed now, so we're back at full-production."

Main says he's now selling about as many hogs as he did before.

He says the hogs are much healthier now, which is one of the big advantages.

Main thinks that there's steady hog production throughout Knox County, even though some have become contractors.
