Fundraising Campaign Begins for Railroad Hall of Fame
It might have taken longer than anticipated, but formal fundraising for the National Railroad Hall of Fame can officially begin.

Hall of Fame Executive Director Julie King told the WGIL Morning News Wednesday morning that the hall's board of directors voted this month to move forward with a national capital campaign, now that they've been able to go over the philanthropic market study that was completed in November.

King says it will be similar to a local fundraising campaign that recently was completed.

"I like to use our local Y-M-C-A as an example because I think our public here is familiar with a couple of very successsful capital campaigns they've had in the past five or six years," King said. "Our process differs only in the fact that we are reaching coast to coast."

King says the first phase will deal with creating what she calls a "campaign nucleus committee" -- based on rail industry leaders that will identify potential large donors.

She says that will take about a year. The hope is to raise at least 80 percent of the total cost of the project, before an all-encompassing fundraising campaign would begin.
