School Officials Don't Like Budget Message
To put it mildly, one official with the Galesburg School District didn't like a word of Governor Pat Quinn's budget address Wednesday.

"Next question."

That was preceded by a very long pause when WGIL asked Galesburg School District Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill if there was anything positive to come out of Wednesday's address in Springfield.

Cahill says there was a lack of substance, especially on issues related to education, in the speech.

Cahill tells WGIL Quinn specifically spoke to funding of early childhood education, and he doesn't buy that either.

"This school district made that decision two years ago through Operation Program Job Save," Cahill said. "It committed a million dollars of its budget to make it certain early child education would continue in Galesburg. We're still looking for our $805,000 in general state aid."

That's the amount Cahill says the state is behind.

Cahill says he's also disappointed in Quinn's proposal to shift more of the pension funding burden to local school districts. He says he realizes that's how Chicago funds its teachers pensions, but what works there won't work in the rest of Illinois.

And, Cahill says Quinn isn't really increasing education funding despite what he said, since school districts likely won't get what they were promised last year.
