Knox County Sophomores Learning How to Lead
Seventy-five high school sophomores in Knox County are being pulled out of class Friday to attend the 4th Annual Teen Leadership Summit at Carl Sandburg College.

Galesburg, Abingdon, Knoxville, and ROWVA will have representation in the day-long event sponsored by the county's health department and healthy youth alliance.

Wellness Promotion Program Supervisor at the Knox County Health Department, Erin Olson, tells WGIL developing leadership in the sophomore classes was the appropriate choice four years ago.

"Freshman were still kind of getting oriented into high school and doing stuff," Olson said. "Sophomores, we had a good feeling they were starting to think about college, (and) they were starting to think about jobs."

"And we thought that they were a good avenue to try and get those leadership skills to because they are out in the community more."

Olson says there are nine different classes Friday focusing on building community leaders. They're spread across four sessions throughout the day.

She says "The Media Guy" will provide a keynote presentation for a fourth straight year. Olson says their video delivers a powerful message on second chances.

Registration at C-S-C for the Teen Leadership Summit ends at 8:55am Friday morning. The event runs from 9am to 2:15pm.
