Fire Officials Coin Morning Monmouth Blaze a "Total Loss"
A late-morning fire in Monmouth has turned a detachable garage to near ashes and gutted the home almost entirely.

Monmouth Firefighters were the first to respond to a garage fire at 860 200th Avenue shortly after 10:30am Friday morning. Battalion Chief Pat Spears says no was one inside the structure when the blaze broke out.

Fire Departments from Monmouth, Alexis, Knoxville, and Kirkwood battled to contain the flames for more than hour. Also on the scene was the Central Warren County Fire Protection District.

A Kirkwood Fire Official says the rear of the home caught fire because of the fierce wind gusts pushing the flames, which were forecasted in excess of 30mph Friday. Both the garage and the home are being described by officials as a "total loss."

Around 12:15 Friday afternoon firefighters were monitoring the activity where the garage once stood, but also scraping away siding and clearing debris from the home. Behind the garage was a pen with a couple goats and chickens, some of which had escaped and were wandering the grounds.

Authorities early Friday had a half a mile of the road blocked off on 200th avenue, just a couple miles east of Monmouth College. At this time, the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
