Durbin to Monmouth College Students: Keep Economy Moving Forward in 2012
A prominent lawmaker says there won't be much progress when it comes to legislation this year, but there will be more job growth.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin spoke before a politics and government class at Monmouth College Friday. Durbin says the country is emerging from the worst recession to date.

Durbin wants 2012 to be about creating even more jobs. National unemployment figures have dropped the past five months and Durbin says the economy has grown over the last 23 months. He tells WGIL that's got to be continued.

"We want to keep on that track, so the President said 'Keep the payroll tax cut in place.' We got a bi-partisan agreement to do that," Durbin said. "Continue to make unemployment payments to those looking for work. Let's try to create jobs. Let's try to find ways to help businesses create jobs, and maybe help schools train people for better-paying jobs. I think that has to be our focus for this coming year."

Durbin says in 2013 the focus needs to be strictly centered on reducing budget deficit. He says "We owe it to the next generation."

The democratic senator calls for spending cuts and raising the taxes for those earning the highest incomes.
