Downtown Crows Could Be History
FIRST REPORTED 6:30am 2/26/12 A problem the City of Galesburg has tried to fight off and on for at least the last 10 years may be one the city is winning -- for now.

Mayor Sal Garza told the public at this week's city council meeting that he wants to look into what can be done to get rid of the crows that have been literally haunting anyone who's been downtown -- or who has had their car parked there -- all winter from sunset to sunrise.

Garza says he realizes what's at stake by doing this.

"For us to move forward, anything that we do specifically in the beautification of our community, it would be for naught," Garza said. "We have these little rainstorms -- I'll refer to them as rainstorms -- and we can't constantly be getting out there to powerwash everything. There just isn't enough time in the day, and not enough manpower to keep doing that."

Garza said he didn't know what it would entail or what it would cost, but that city staff would be working "dilligently" to get it done.

Aldermen several years ago paid several thousand dollars to a man who reportedly was successful in crow mitigation in other communities, but wouldn't identify himself nor his methods.

Eyewitnesses said they've seen a truck travelling in downtown Galesburg this week that seemed to be blaring a sound that was used to distract the crows.
