'No Go' on Junction Gas Station for Knoxville
A gas station Knoxville city officials wanted badly to annex won't likely be happening because an agreement is already on file with the city of Galesburg.

Knoxville's Attorney Rob McCoy says a past owner of the Junction Gas Station entered into an annexation agreement that was awarded to Galesburg at the trial court level.

McCoy says the court's decision is being appealed over Galesburg's contiguous claims, but the gas station's attorney has misplaced the appeal documents.

He says there's an important lesson to be learned from this.

"If there are places that you're interested in annexing you should probably take action proactively because they do not have to now be contiguous to the city to get an annexation agreement," McCoy said. "It's sort of like the law of the playground if you call 'dibbs.'"

Acting Mayor Bob Johnson has said before that annexing the gas station on U-S Highway 150 would boost Knoxville's economy.

He's said too that Junction Gas Station Owner Chad Patel hoped to strengthen his ties to the city through the annexation.

Two months ago alderman discussed grabbing both the gas station and R-P Lumber as a package deal. McCoy says if Galesburg wins the appeal case, they also would be entitled to R-P Lumber because the land would be contiguous.
