Knoxville Sports Complex Half a Million Dollars Over Budget
District 202's Superintendent says it was a combination of three things that led to the new all-weather sports complex being more than half a million dollars over budget.

Steve Wilder says one factor was the initial cost estimations ending up being over budget. Another, he says, was modifying designs to make sure the district gets it right.

Wilder tells WGIL the third contributor dealt with volunteer-ism.

"While we've had (a) great response from the community, I think there have been some factors that have worked against us," Wilder said. "For example, the weather, it's been an unusually warm winter, (and) some of the guys and girls that might have been able come out and were willing to help, have been working hard to put food on the table."

"So we certainly want to respect that, and certainly will continue to do the best that we can."

The project calls for a new football field and surrounding track at Knoxville High School-- both already well in the works. The total cost though is now projected to be around $1.5 million dollars.

Good news is, Wilder says, the recent award from the governor of $20.2 million dollars in capital funding includes an allowance of $530,000 for funding athletic facilities.

$850,000 dollars had already been collected, and Wilder says the district won't have to tap into as much of the reserves to make up the difference.
