Monmouth Names Next Chief of Police
A 37-year veteran of enforcing the law for the city of Dekalb has been named Monmouth's next Chief of Police.

Bill Feithen was police chief in Dekalb the last eleven years. He will officially begin heading the police force in Monmouth February 27th.

City Administrator Eric Hanson tells WGIL Feithen was an attractive hire because of his strong background.

"In our conversation with him, he was obviously looking for a new opportunity," Hanson said. "He's been through a lot in Dekalb. From a regional perspective, some folks may know they've had a number of significant issues there, either on the campus of Northern Illinois University or around the community."

Despite those past challenges, Hanson says surrounding himself with a college environment was important to Feithen.

"Having spent all that time in a community with a college or a university, he was looking for a college town," Hanson said. "It's something he's familar with, comfortable with, and obviously having Monmouth College as a part of our community was a draw for him."

Feithen was selected out of a pool of around 25 other candidates. The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police aided in the recruitment process and recommended Feithen.

The city also promoted former Acting Mayor, Lieutenant Joe Switzer, to Deputy Chief.
