Galesburg Agency Facilitating Efforts for a Better Community
The Galesburg Community Relations Commission hosted a public forum titled "A Time to Share" Tuesday night inside the city's community center to address issues facing residents.

Resident Gwen Melton applauded the commission for hosting forums and encouraged more. She says her east-side neighborhood was really shaken up by the summer's Kiwanis Park shooting.

Melton says the first forums were when authorities began to show compassion for her own emotions.

"I felt like for the first time, that the fear that I felt with the crime in my neighborhood, the police and the people that were in authority began to realize that maybe she has a point," she said. "(They're thinking) maybe she's not just a crazy, nosey neighbor lady that wants to be involved in everything in her neighborhood and wants to cause trouble for everyone."

Tuesday night Melton asked members of the commission to explore how to make communication lines between police and residents even more productive.

Other residents Tuesday informed the agency they'd like more monitoring of programs and activities for teenagers to keep them out of trouble.
