Local Reactions To Pope's Resignation
Monday morning Pope Benedict XVI announced he would be resigning at the end of this month citing health issues.

The news came as a shock to many. This is the first time in six-hundred years since a Pope resigned.

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria sent out a news release in response to the Pope's decision. Bishop Daniel Jenky said in the news release he was "Shocked."

Locally, Monsignor Ernest Pizzamiglio from Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Galesburg tells WGIL he was taken back by the news.

"Did I hear that right? I thought I was half asleep or something," says Pizzamiglio.

"Father Ernie" says it's sad to see Pope Benedict go but he tells WGIL he understands the reasons behind the decision.

"I'm in agreement with him. He's just a great Pope and I hate to see it happen - that he's resigning, but I think he's correct in doing that," says Pizzamiglio.

Pizzamiglio says the Church will go on and there's hope a new Pope will be elected by Easter.
