Community Comes Out to Fight Hunger
The gym at Bethel Baptist Church was unrecognizable Saturday morning as Impact Hunger Committee members transformed the area into a makeshift assembly line operation.

Stations were occupied with volunteers filling baggies with rice, dried veggies and other minerals to be weighted, vacuum sealed, boxed up and placed on a pallet.

Those pallets would be placed onto an eighteen wheeler and shipped across the globe to Nigeria.

Committee Member Laura Wintory tells WGIL they needed to be ready to go by 8am Saturday, so the committee started Friday afternoon.

"We were blessed the truck got here [Friday] afternoon," Wintory said. "So, they started unloading the truck at about 3:30pm. We had the tables already set up. The Impact Lives -- the group we're partnering with -- they have all the scales and the sealers and the tubs in the hopper, and they brought the food in -- the bulk food in. So, we started doing that at about 3:30. We were finished with that by 6."

Wintory says the committee was back at seven a-m to get the final pieces into place.

She says it wasn't even eight o'clock before people started showing up ready to help.

Wintory says most of the people who came out to help were returning volunteers from last year's Impact Hunger project.
