Grand Jury Indicts Accused Murderer
POSTED 3:09pm 2/19/13 A Knox County grand jury has filed new charges in the case of an Oneida man accused of stabbing a Galesburg man to death last month.

25-year old Kai Lefler was in Knox County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon for what was to be a preliminary hearing, but Judge Paul Mangieri told Lefler a grand jury last week indicted him on new charges including four-counts of First-Degree Murder, two-counts of Second-Degree Murder, and single counts of Involuntary Manslaughter, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, and Attempted Burglary.

Lefler was arrested January 20th after allegedly trying to break into 23-year old Robert Kilgore's car outside his Chestnut Street home. Kilgore suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at a Peoria hospital.

When asked if he understood the charges, Lefler this afternoon originally said "not exactly," then after a further explanation, said he did understand.

Lefler, through Public Defender Jim Harrell, pleaded not guilty and asked for a trial by jury. An April first pre-trial hearing date was set, with a trial starting as soon as the week of April 15th.

Before that, Lefler will be back in court March sixth for a hearing on petitions to revoke probation from a pair of 2011 burglary and criminal damage cases for which he was convicted.

Lefler remains jailed on $1 million bond.
