Grade School Gets A Special Thank You
Fourth grade classes at Hedding Grade school were assigned a special service project--collect and encourage students to collect pennies for this years penny parade.

And to make the challenge a little more exciting teachers and administrators told students the class who collects the most pennies will get a juice and doughnut party.

With three little words--juice, doughnut and party students started to take the challenge very seriously and set out to win that party.

Hedding Principle Michelle Andrews tells WGIL the whole challenge became a school effort.

"They would go from class to class and pick up the pennies from them and cheer them on," says Andrews. "Especially the younger kids liked that and then they would bring in more pennies and so it became a really fun project for everyone."

That work paid off as the school was able to collect a little more than a thousand dollars for the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association.

The Association decided to present the students yesterday afternoon with a special assembly with a slide show and a brief history of Carl Sandburg.

The fourth grade classes got an extra special gift--two books written by Carl Sandburg so they can continue learning about the famous poet.
