IDES Closure Moved Up
FIRST REPORTED 2/27/13 5:30am The announcement came in January that the Illinois Department of Employment Security would be closing seven offices.

The initial closures were expected to take place by mid-March, pending union negotiations, but that date has been bumped up to this Friday according to a press release Tuesday.

IDES decided to close seven offices around the state, Galesburg included, due to a reduction of $20 million in federal funding. The IDES is funded nearly 100 percent with federal dollars.

The Department, before announcing the closures, had previously consolidated offices in an effort to save money.

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza attempted to communicate with IDES Director Jay Rowell in an effort to develop a plan to prevent or slow the closure.

After some consideration, it was announced that the offices would proceed with the closure in Galesburg. Some employees were offered a chance to move to other IDES offices.

The offices in Galesburg will not provide services after Thursday, but officials say staff will continue to work in the offices until the layoff is complete.
