| Local Newspaper Looking to Make Comeback |
The Galesburg's weekly newspaper of news and opinion is looking to make a comeback after a three year hiatus.
"The Zephyr" closed shop in December of 2010 after long time Publisher Norm Winick passed away.
Mike Kroll who was an active member of writer for "The Zephyr" decided to launch the Galesburg Planet giving Zephyr writers a place to write.
Founder of the "New Zephyr" Jon Gallagher tells WGIL the Galesburg Planet wasn't a bad online paper, but there was definitely something missing.
"It just didn't really have the same flavor that The Zephyr did," says Gallagher. "He did a very good job with it, the people who wrote for it did a great job of writing, but it just didn't have the same as the printed version of it."
Gallagher says he'd been talking with Kroll about how to get "The Zephyr" back into print, but it was going to be too expensive to get it started up again.
As time passed Gallagher was able to come up with some ideas that could help relaunch the paper.
After talking with others involved with "The Zephyr" it was clear relaunching the paper could be a reality.
Gallagher took on the task of creating the "New Zephyr" with the help of about six others who formally wrote for the original Zephyr.
There will be an organizational meeting March-13 at the Sandburg Mall to discuss the direction of the paper.
Gallagher says they plan on keeping it a news and opinion paper but are looking into different formats such as a new magazine style.
He says thing are still up in the air. The future of the "New Zephyr" is dependent on how many people show interest in participating in its creation. |
