School Board Decision On Mascot Angers Residents
When District 276 set out to have the kids choose the new mascot for the new consolidated district they didn't expect it be as much of a headache as it turned into.

Back in December the School board voted to let the kids nominate names for the new district mascot, and students started submitting nominations for Commandos and Trojans.

At that point the board realized they hadn't made the directions clear because they were looking for new names.

The board voted again to asked the kids to resubmit ideas but explained the choice of the Commandos and Trojans would not be considered.

Board member Amy Goehl told the board the hunt for a mascot has opened up a can of worms.

"I had a gal come to my house and tell me that Avon would like to stay Trojans," says Goehl. "The only reason they would like to stay Trojans would be financial, money that we were going to be spending. I wanted to let you know that it was brought to me and I tried to find anybody I could to talk about it."

Board President Sherry Lomax says it has nothing to do with liking or not liking the suggestions it was more about getting a fresh start with a new look. Abingdon resident David Dickerson tells WGIL the process was a slap in the face of the Democratic system.

"They told them how to write the vote, they told them they didn't like it," says Dickerson. "They told them 'no, that's not going to be good enough' we'll have a revote. What if the community said they didn't like the way school board turned out and we want a revote? I mean come on, you can't do that to kids."

The Board approved the new mascot name of the A-Town Tornados and the new district colors are green, yellow and black.
