Abingdon Debates Wheel Tax Stickers
The city of Abingdon might soon do away with its wheel tax stickers.

The Abingdon City Council last night discussed either doing away with the stickers -- placed on residents' vehicles -- or somehow altering the program, after learning that many residents just don't purchase them and it's not a big money-making venture for the city.

Second Ward Alderman Myron Hovind says it's a problem all over the city, but most noticeably where he lives.

"On my street alone there's [sic] probably six residents that does [sic] not have wheel tax stickers," says Hovind. "It's kind of unfair for the ones that are buying them, it costs a lot of money to enforce it. I think our revenues are 17-thousand that we might get out of them, then you take the cost of printing them and I think we need to consider throughout this budget thing - maybe we'll abolish it."

Abingdon Police Chief Jerry Roberts says he supports eliminating the wheel tax sticker, but also says if aldermen want a stronger enforcement effort, he'll come up with one.

It's not clear when a decision will be made. Speaking of the city's budget, however, Mayor Roger Stegall is urging aldermen to complete budget work in their respective committees before any new aldermen are elected in April.
