IDES Considering Mayor's Proposal
The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced it would be closing seven offices by mid-March. Galesburg was among the offices affected by the closures - which prompted Mayor Sal Garza to develop a plan for IDES consideration.

Details on the plan were short, pending a joint press announcement between the City and IDES, but Garza did say the closure will move forward.

The Galesburg office found itself on the chopping block after the IDES said they prioritized offices by the amount of services provided and certain lease considerations.

Garza tells WGIL the plan - which was submitted this week - was well received, but there are considerations that need to be given.

"In light of the facility that is closing, and people are being given the opportunity to relocate to other offices or some of that workforce is being cut away, and that's where the consideration and sensitivities lie," Garza said, "that the director wanted to ensure."

Research on other communities experiencing foreclosures was done before the proposal was submitted.

IDES has already closed or consolidated several employment offices around the state due to revenue constraints.

Garza has said in the past that Galesburg, due to it's current economic climate, is in need of greater employment services, not less.
