Red Dresses Draw Heart Awareness
It might have been the cold, or the fact that they were wearing something out of the ordinary for many of them -- a red dress.

But dozens of Galesburg residents -- including the entire Galesburg Silver Streaks Boys Basketball Team -- yelled, cheered, and ran in the first-ever Red Dress Dash Saturday. It was an initiative to bring awareness to women's heart health put on by Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

Hospital Public Relations Director Eileen Inness tells WGIL many women might not know just how important heart health is to them.

"Women don't know that it's the number one killer," Inness said. "Women are so busy taking care of everyone in their family, all of their extended relatives, and rarely do they take care of them. Recently, there was a female who had suffered a heart attack at age 36. It can happen."

February is recognized nationally as American Heart Month, and the Red Dress Dash was one of a number of activities Cottage Hospital is hosting that's geared especially toward women's heart health.

Silver Streaks coaches say while they were pleased to be able to help bring awareness to women's heart health, they also say that it was an important team-building exercise for the players.
