Area Business Evacuates After Chemical Spill
A chemical leak forced a number of employees of a local newspaper out of the office this morning. Publisher Tony Scott says around 9:45 Tuesday morning, workers from the Register Mail were evacuated from their offices after a chemical spill in the loading dock area exposed workers to a type of harmful gas and odor. Galesburg Fire Department and Amerigas were notified of the spill of a propane tank used to operate a forklift. Galesburg Fire Department Battalion Chief Harrell Timmons tells WGIL the threat was contained and employees were given the all clear to go back to work.

"There was an LP tank that they used to drive a forklift at the Register Mail and they had a leak and fortunately it was out in the loading dock area which is already kind of open anyway so that was it. They got it shut off and got it outside and pretty much removed all the hazard from the general area when they did that."

Scott says he was notified of the situation by a press supervisor. He says the newspaper called both the gas company and the Galesburg Fire Department before evacuating the nearly 70 employees who were back at work within an hour. Scott says the newspaper printing was only delayed about a half hour and area residents will likely see little to no delay in their deliveries Tuesday afternoon.
