Stimulus for District 205? Probably Not
President Barack Obama's economic recovery plan that recently was signed into law was supposed to include money for education. But to hear the Galesburg School District's top money man tell it, don't expect any of it.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Paul Woehlke, told the school board Monday night that there's no telling how much money the district could receive, if anything, from the stimulus package.

Woehlke says that's because the money isn't really being distributed in any sort of way that would make you think it IS stimulus. "Congress used existing vehicles for disbursing the funding," Woehlke said, "namely, Title One, and the IDEA Special Funding Mechanisms. The regulations that are flowing out are that we have to retain the restrictions on the spending of that money that exist on our normal amounts of money we receive through those channels."

In other words, Woehlke says, while you might hear that significant increases in dollars will be flowing to local schools, it seems that districts will possibly have a hard time actually spending that extra money and still stay within the normal funding restrictions.

The Galesburg School Board Monday night voted to reduce its teaching and support staff force by 15 due to uncertain enrollment or grant funding. District officials say that's an annual event, and depending on how the state budget goes, those people will likely get hired back.
