Consumer Debt Tops Attorney General's Top Ten Complaint List
The Illinois Attorney General is releasing her "Top Ten" list of consumer complaints for 2008.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the effects of the ongoing home foreclosure crisis and economic downturn dominate the list. More than 33,000 consumers filed complaints with the A-G's Consumer Protection Division last year. The top complaint was Consumer Debt, which includes mortgage lending, collections and credit cards.

Madigan says Consumer Debt complaints increased 28 percent.

"We are painfully aware that our nation's deepening financial crisis is hitting home for tens of thousands of Illinoisans."

Madigan says more than 2,400 homeowners filed residential mortgage foreclosure complaints last year, nearly triple the number from 2007. She says that's not a surprise given that foreclosure filings in Illinois have shot up 126 percent over the last two years.

The total number of Debt Complaints to Madigan's office was 6,732. Identity theft ranked second with about 5,700 complaints, followed by Construction Home Improvement, Telecommunications, and Promotions and Schemes.

Information about consumer issues and how to get help can be found on Madigan's website at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.
