Another Gambling Expansion Proposal in Springfield
While some lawmakers bicker over a larger expansion of gambling, a smaller plan has gained approval of a Senate committee. A bill to allow a pilot program to sell Lotto and Mega Millions tickets over the Internet was unanimously approved by the Senate Gaming Committee. The bill would also allow a private-sector manager to try to increase lottery sales.

Sponsor Senator Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) says safeguards have been built into this plan to try to keep kids from buying tickets on-line, but Anita Bedell of Illinois Church Action Against Alcohol and Addiction Problems doesn't think those safeguards will work. She says kids can use someone else's credit card or talk an adult into picking up the prize for them.

This bill now awaits a full Senate vote.
