| BREAKING NEWS: Retired Knox College Coach Tim Heimann Dies |
UPDATED 10:44am 3/13/09 A Knox College alum and longtime basketball coach there -- a man many people refer to as a local legend -- has died after a courageous battle with cancer.
Knox College confirms that Tim Heimann died early Friday morning at the age of 60. He had battled cancer for nearly a year. Heimann graduated 38 years ago from Knox College, and spent 24 years coaching the Prairie Fire men's basketball team. He retired from that post at the end of the 2007-2008 season, after compiling a win-loss record of 258-282.
Knox College Athletic Director Chad Eisele tells WGIL he last talked with Heimann a month ago, and the news then wasn't good. "Four weeks ago today (March 13), (Heimann) called to tell me he'd gotten bad news about his fight with cancer, and it's just gone downhill so fast," Eisele said. "It's been really hard to be prepared for."
Eisele says Heimann is "an outstanding man" who has meant a lot to a lot of people, and says the outpouring of support from the Knox community throughout the country is, in his words, unbelieveable. Eisele, who knew Heimann for 31-years, says Knox will never be the same.
A memorial service on the Knox campus, Eisele says, is tentatively set for Saturday, March 28th. The basketball court was recently dedicated in Heimann's honor.
