Unemployment Climbs in Galesburg Area in January
Unemployment is up across the board in the Galesburg area.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security's figures for January show unemployment in the City of Galesburg at 8.4 percent, up 1 percent compared to December of 2008 and an increase of 1.2 percent from January of 2008. Knox County's rate checked in at 8.2 percent, like Galesburg, up a full percentage point over last December's rate and 1.1 percent higher than the rate in January of 2008.

The report from the state reveals 2,051 Knox County residents were unemployed as of the end of January, an increase of 251 in just one month's time. The number of unemployed workers in Galesburg increased by 144 from December of 2008.

The rate for the Galesburg area as a whole was 7.8 percent in January, an increase of 9-tenths of a percent from January of last year. Warren County, which is included in the Galesburg area's numbers, fared a little bit better than the others with a 6.7 percent unemployment rate. That's up 6-tenths of a percent from December and 4-tenths higher than the year-ago percentage.

IDES says the Galesburg area's unemployment rate increased between January of 2008 and January of 2009, but the non-farm payroll jobs total was unchanged. The state says increases in Business-Professional Services and Government compensated for a drop in Construction jobs.

Around the area, the highest rate is in Henderson County at 11.2 percent. The increase there is up 2.6 percent compared to December of last year and January of last year. Henry County's over-the-year increase jumped 2.3 percent as unemployment climbed to 8.5 percent in January. Fulton County's rate is 9 percent, up 1.3 percent from December and 1.4 percent over the past year.

All 12 of the state's metropolitan areas saw their unemployment rates increase for the 21st consecutive month when compared to previous year levels. State officials blame the high jobless rates in Illinois on the national unemployment climate.
