Harley Knosher Remembers Tim Heimann
The recent death of a man affiliated with Knox College for nearly four decades is bringing condolences from across the community.

Tim Heimann, who graduated from Knox College in 1970 and went on to have a stellar career as the men's basketball coach, died at home early Friday morning after a nearly year-long battle with cancer. Heimann's former coach, assistant on the bench and close friend Harley Knosher is among the many people who are expressing sadness in the wake of Heimann's passing.

Knosher coached Heimann in basketball at Knox College in the late 1960's. Heimann would eventually take over for Knosher as the men's head basketball coach in 1985. Knosher tells WGIL he had a range of emotions when he found out Heimann's courageous fight was over.

"When I learned that Tim had passed away, in one sense there was a certain amount of relief because the last week to ten days it (was) so difficult for him to really enjoy any aspect of his life because he reached such a weakened state physically."

But at the same time, Knosher said he had "a feeling of terrible sadness to realize that Tim really was no longer with us."

After graduating from Knox, Heimann returned to the college to work in the admissions office and with the Dean of Students before joining the athletic department in 1973 as the junior varsity men's basketball coach. Heimann also coached with the football, women's tennis and baseball teams. His varsity basketball head coaching career for the Prairie Fire resulted in over 250 wins and coach of the year honors.

Knosher says he hoped that Heimann would direct the basketball program to the well being of the players as opposed to any goal that may supercede it. Knosher says the late coach did it brilliantly.

Knosher also referred to Heimann as the personification of "a Knox man."
