Many Ideas for Cutting Illinois' Staggering Budget Deficit
If you've ever said you'd like to go through the state budget and cut out the waste, this is your chance.

While some groups and top lawmakers believe raising taxes and increasing revenue is the way to solve the state's budget problems, others think curbing spending is
the way to go.

Several Republican lawmakers joined the Illinois Policy Institute as it announced its Economic Reform Agenda for Illinois. That agency offers ideas about cutting if the state ever hopes to get back on its feet.

State Representative Michael Connelly (R-Lisle) is sponsoring a measure that, if passed, would require state lawmakers to eliminate an old state program if they want to implement a new one. Connelly says this will ensure that the state has enough money to cover all of its programs.

Another measure, called the Sunshine Act, aims to create a commission of four lawmakers and four members of the public to comb through state spending and see what's working and what isn't. State Representative David Reis (R-Willow Hill)sponsors this bill, which is making its way through committees.
