Playing it Safe on St. Patrick's Day
It will take more than the luck of the Irish to keep you safe on the roads during St Patrick's Day festivities.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is working with the State Police, using $500,000 in federal highway safety money on extra patrols and roadside safety checks.

"What's happened over the last eight or 10 years, it's evolved into a big celebration - a lot of partying, a lot of drinking alcohol," says Mike Stout, director of IDOT's Traffic Safety Division, noting many people started partying over the weekend. "It really has turned into one of our biggest challenges to make sure people get to and from safely."

Stout urges people to use a designated driver if they are drinking.
