Group Encourages More Openness in Government This Week
Sunshine Week is under way -- a national effort to discuss the importance of an open and transparent government. It runs through Saturday.

Survey results, released in conjunction with the week, placed Illinois at 32nd in the nation, which might seem like a high ranking, but Sunshine Week coordinator Debra Gersh-Hernandez says the survey focused on how easy it is to obtain nursing home reports, how easy it is to find out if your local gas station is overcharging, etc.

Gersh-Hernandez says former Gov. Rod Blagojevich probably wasn't trying to withhold that information, and more likely had problems with financial disclosure and audit reports. While news reports about Blagojevich quashing information requests are plentiful, she says those requests involve only a small number of the details available to citizens. The survey determined how easy it was to find a list of 20 criteria online.
