Seminary Street Planning Series of Events; Mayor "Thrilled"
An expansion of what has been a pretty good draw for one area of downtown Galesburg almost didn't get noticed at Monday night's Galesburg City Council meeting.

Aldermen, as part of their consent agenda, approved the closure of part of South Seminary Street for a number of "First Friday" events the merchants there are planning on having once a month between April and September.

What originally was an opportunity for those merchants to stay open later and offer good deals to customers, is something that City Manager Dane Bragg says is growing well beyond that. "They're talking about having music and art, as well as food tastings available on...Seminary Street between Main and Simmons, and it would be closed during those times from 5pm to 9pm each of those Friday nights," Bragg said.

That's with the exception of April third, where the event would go on, but the road would not be closed. Nevertheless, Galesburg Mayor Gary Smith says he's thrilled at the idea.

"For several of those people who say there's nothing to do in Galesburg, now there is something to do in Galesburg," Smith said.

Aldermen Monday also approved the purchase of a computer system for the police department that will allow officers to file police reports from the computer terminals in their squad cars rather than as they have time at the police station.
