Groups Fights Proposed Railroad Re-Regulation
The Stagg Act of 1980 deregulated the freight railroad industry as it was on the brink of collapse, but there's a renewed call on the federal level to reregulate it. Craig Coil of the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur says that can't happen if the industry is expected to survive.

Coil says government regulation would do nothing to foster growth or promote investment into the nation's railroads. He expects the industry to expand in the next few years, but he says if the railroads are re-regulated, there likely won't be enough money to complete that expansion.

Coil says the railroad is the most effective means of transporting goods across the country. In fact, he says "a freight train in the state of Illinois or a freight train moving throughout the country can move a ton of freight on one gallon of gas 436 miles. That's pretty incredible. Railroads are four times more efficient than trucks."
