Lawmaker Reacts to Historic Sites Remaining Closed Under Quinn's Budget Proposal
A local lawmaker says he still doesn't understand how a group of facilities that make money for the state can continue to be closed.

State Representative Don Moffitt is talking about the part in Governor Pat Quinn's budget proposal given Wednesday and heard live on WGIL, where none of the historic sites closed by Governor Rod Blagojevich following last year's budget squabbles, would reopen. That would include the Carl Sandburg Birthplace in Galesburg, and the Bishop Hill State Historic Site in Henry County.

Moffitt tells WGIL if done right, the state's historic sites would not be much a problem on the state's checkbook. "With the proper marketing, the proper promotion, I think the historic sites can attract business to our communities, and actually come close to paying their own way or maybe pay their way when you add in the sales tax that they bring to a community, the tourist traffic that it brings," Moffitt said.

Moffitt says when he gets the opportunity, he will ask Governor Pat Quinn about historic sites. He notes that Quinn referenced Carl Sandburg in Wednesday's address. He says if Quinn can quote Sandburg in a speech, the least he can do is help supporters of the Sandburg birthplace here.

Quinn recently opted to open a number of state parks Blagojevich shuttered as well.
