Hospital CEO Says Tour Might Influence Education Desires of Children
A relatively new resident of Galesburg, and the man in charge of one of the city's largest employers, says a tour of his facility, or any others for that matter, might change the minds of youth who might not want to do well in school or go to college.

One of the panelists at the third of six City of Galesburg "Community Visioning" assemblies Thursday night was Galesburg Cottage Hospital CEO Ken Hutchenrider, who says technology in the medical field alone has changed so much in the last 20 years that he really can't hire people who don't have some sort of college education.

Hutchenrider says it's up to adults and businesspeople in general to help make sure that kids know that they need to go to college, and that's not just lip service. "I have seen that when we have an opportunity for some of the high school students to come and spend the day with us, and we show them the different opportunities in school, I believe, that it has helped to open their eyes, that we as businesses have been able to show them...because sometimes when you're consistently with an educator, it becomes white noise," Hutchenrider said.

Hutchenrider and others suggested that more businesses provide job shadowing programs as a way to help kids understand the importance of higher education. He says while good parenting is key, everyone must be a part of the solution.
