Illinois has a new director of State Police. Jonathan E. Monken, an Army veteran, was introduced Sunday by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Monken replaces Larry Trent, who resigned last week after spending 22 years with the department. Trent was appointed director in 2003 by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Monken is an Army veteran who was an advisor to military and civilian police forces in Iraq as an executive officer with the Army corps that coordinated civil-military operations in Iraq .

He was a tank platoon leader heading more than 100 combat missions in Iraq. He also served in Kosovo. He has no civilian police experience in the U.S.

Monken, 29, is an Arizona native who grew up in St. Charles, IL, graduated from St. Charles High School and from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He resides in St. Charles.

Quinn and Monken both stressed the importance of integrity in this job. Illinois has about 2,000 state troopers.
